Rating 10/10

Review

My rating is relative to other vertical dramas not to full blown series or theater level movies. Wow! I had heard good things about this one, and I have to agree with the fans who think these two leads need to appear in more top billed Chinese dramas. Their chemistry was sizzling, their romance felt believable, and I thought both actors did a fantastic job.

What really surprised me was how much I enjoyed the story itself. This wasn't one of those silly, over-the-top vertical dramas that relies on ridiculous misunderstandings, exaggerated reactions, or cheesy romantic moments to keep things moving. It had a surprisingly well-developed plot, some genuine character growth, and enough mystery surrounding Ren Jiangye's identity to keep me interested in what would happen next.

I also appreciated that the romance felt connected to the characters' circumstances rather than simply being thrown together for the sake of giving viewers a few steamy scenes. Gu Yueji is heartbroken, lonely, and dealing with a lot more than just a failed relationship. When she and Jiangye begin getting closer, their attraction makes sense within the story. Their chemistry certainly helps, but I also believed the emotional connection developing between them.

Both leads are gorgeous, and I was especially impressed by how natural their performances felt. Dai Gaozheng reminded me a little of a younger Lee Jong Suk, particularly with his natural look. He has the kind of screen presence that makes you want to see him in more substantial roles in high rated series and movies. Yu Yin was equally lovely, and together they made this romance work.

Another pleasant surprise was the overall look of the drama. I wondered whether AI might have been used in some way, but I never felt distracted by an overly artificial or heavily filtered appearance. If AI was involved, I thought the result was handled well because the visuals didn't have that obvious fake look that can sometimes pull me out of a story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one and would happily watch more vertical dramas of a similar quality. It's an easy recommendation for romance fans looking for something engaging between longer series, or for anyone who has fallen down the vertical-drama rabbit hole and wants something that feels a little more substantial than the usual quick-and-cheesy fare.

If you're looking for attractive leads, sizzling chemistry, a story with some substance, and a romance that keeps you watching, Today, a Cloud Loves Me is well worth your time.

Honestly, I didn't have any major complaints about this drama. Even though the romantic scenes were spicier than I usually prefer, they worked for me because I could understand how these two ended up getting so close. Yueji was vulnerable and lonely after everything she had been through, and the attraction between them felt natural rather than gratuitous. The chemistry between the actors certainly didn't hurt, either!

I was curious about the title because he is obviously not a cloud. But, I think it is more poetic like how, when you are lonely, a single cloud in the sky can feel comforting. I don't know. Or maybe it references some deeper Chinese symbolism I am not aware of. It was a very unique title.

I also liked that Jiangye's secret identity added more to the story than just a convenient plot twist. His decision to hide the truth eventually creates a real problem between them, especially because Yueji has already been betrayed. From her perspective, discovering that he hasn't been honest gives her another reason not to trust someone who has become important to her. I could understand why the truth hurt her, even if I also understood that his intentions weren't necessarily malicious.

My biggest wish is that the ending had given us a little more permanence. I understood the sweetness of Jiangye starting over and introducing himself properly, as though he wanted to build their relationship the right way this time. It was a lovely gesture, and I appreciated what it meant. Still, after everything they had been through, I wanted a clearer indication of where they stood and what their future looked like. Were they officially together? Were they dating with marriage in mind? Could we have had a little confirmation that they were going to build a life together?

Honestly, I would have loved an explicit commitment or even a wedding ending. And goodness, Yueji looked absolutely gorgeous in that red wedding attire! It made me want just a little more time with them and a more definite romantic payoff.

That is a pretty small complaint considering how much I enjoyed the rest of the drama. I loved the leads, believed their chemistry, and found the story far more engaging than I expected from a vertical series. This one left me wanting to see these actors together again, preferably in another drama that gives them room to show what they can do.

Just when she feels she has run out of options, an encounter with Ren Jiangye, the delivery rider who brings her birthday cake, leads to an unexpected living arrangement.

As the two share a home and navigate their daily struggles, their practical agreement gradually gives way to attraction, affection, and a growing sense of belonging.
